When I was a kid, exercise and diet were framed to me as like, 'There's something wrong with how you look', but never once was exercise and diet propositioned to me in terms of mental health. I just wish that was presented to people differently.

FAQ

Why group coaching and membership?

After two decades of serving people, I want to serve as many people I can at once. Simply put, group coaching and membership allows me to work more efficiently, and share as many resources to as many people at once as possible. Also, science shows us that the power of community and support that you’ll receive by being in a like-minded group fosters behavior change and positive psychology shifts.

Why focus on a mental and emotional lens?

I personally have had challenges in my mental health and big traumas in my life that left me not knowing which way was up. I learned into a lot of unhealthy behaviors to deal with them which just became a vicious cycle. Fast forward to me breaking these cycles and leaning into healthy habits to support my mental and emotional health, I want to support others in this situation. Also, globally we are all not doing so great in the mental health realm, and it's all hands on deck to help.

Why Whales?

I grew up near the ocean. While I now live in a landlocked area, I dream of the sea. Whales are magnificent gentle giants that I have felt a connection to my whole life. They are like the elephants of the ocean- deeply emotional beings. My therapist also gave me an analogy one time when I had a hard time with my sense of belonging. She told me that there are all sorts of different types of people. Whale people are those that are large in life in their presence, yet deeply emotional, sensitive, and non-harming. They have the preference to go deep into the ocean of emotions and stay there while coming up to the surface for air, to release water, and connect with other beings on land in the air. There are also very few whales on the planet so at times it can feel lonely. This resonated with me. I also judged myself for all the emotions I felt, not being a part of the “in crowd” and having a hard time with small talk over strong connection. To me whales represent that we can be deeply emotional and come to the surface and I know there are others there. Together, and with other types of people, we can form a pod to connect and build a healthy physical, emotional, and mental life together- on ‘good days’ and ‘tough days.’

What if I don’t do Yoga?

I am a Yoga instructor and have my own strong personal yoga practice. While I know not everyone is into it, I do know the multitude of benefits, physically and mentally. I invite you to be open to look at it through the lens of trying new behaviors that will make you feel well. Yoga doesn’t always mean tying yourself into a pretzel. It can mean breathing, stretching, building strength, journaling, or simply tuning in to your body and mind in the present moment. Not for you? Skip over that part of the membership as there is plenty more. Remember, this is a judgement free group so you its safe try something new or not like something.

Well-being as activism?

I truly believe (and evidence shows) that if we all felt even 10% better, our relationships would improve, we would increased compassion, and be able to communicate in a more grounded way. I don’t expect world peace overnight, however if we can start to invest in our own mental and physical health, then we can come together and feel better to focus on some bigger issues with a more healthy perspective and energy.

Will I be a member forever?

While my goal is to create connection, support, and community- my biggest goal is to create self-efficacy in healthy habits and behavior change. I hope WhaleBeing is a jump start or sustainable maintenance plan for you to feel well. No snake oil here, just good intentions and autonomy.

What are your core values?

I believe everyone deserves to feel well. I believe that looks different for everyone. Everyone is welcome here and I believe in and respect all people, values, ethnicities, gender identification, sexual orientation, disabilities, and the number of toes one has. I also strongly require this within the group.

Is this an alternative to health care or mental health services?

Absolutely not. I am not a doctor. I am a board-certified health coach that is an expert in lifestyle change. I believe in a village. This group is for anyone who has undergone, is currently in, or wants to combine professional medical help mentally and physically. You may even take some of the recommendations or practices from your other providers and learn how to implement them through the goal-setting process within the group. Also, consult with your professional when trying anything new to make sure its a good fit for you.
