5 Steps to Building Your Spiritual Practice

For centuries, the practice of spirituality has been the true foundation of many cultures and has guided various individuals to further reconnect their souls, find their authentic purpose and embody their true selves.

Spirituality is very fluid, and there is no true “one size fits all” approach when it comes to practicing spirituality. It is unique to the individual and looks different for everyone.

However, there is one aspect that looks very similar for everyone looking to embark on their spiritual journey and build their spiritual practice.

That is the phrase “Where do I start?”.

Although the initial starting point to beginning your spiritual practice looks different for each individual, your routine should consist of a healthy balance between each wellness pillar. Those pillars include your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellness.

Now with that in mind, let’s explore the 5 steps to building your spiritual practice!

1. Start Small, and Pick Your Practice

When starting your spiritual practice journey, it is important to start small and pick a practice that resonates with you. You may be swayed by external factors, however, you should pick a practice that speaks to you and is relevant to your particular way of living.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Verbal Affirmations
  • Breathwork Exercises
  • Grounding Yourself with Nature
  • Practicing Gratitude
  • Option to Choose a Religious Path of Your Choice
  • Poetry

There are many more aspects of spirituality beyond the list above that you can embark on, and whichever one you choose to explore, it is important to start small and slowly integrate it into your way of life.

If you find that the end of the day provides you with enough time to embed your chosen spiritual practice into your routine, then that is great! If mornings work best for you, then even better! Take a look at your current lifestyle, and start to slowly embed your chosen spiritual practice into your already-established routine at your own pace and on your own time.

2. Create Your Space

Take a look around your home, do you have a space where you feel comfortable and safe? Does your home provide you with the tools needed to practice your chosen spiritual practice? If yes, then it’s time to get creative!

Whether it is in your bedroom, garage, general living space or your backyard, your space should provide you with the tools you need to create a safe space where you can practice your spiritual practice.

The space you have chosen will have to be one you are comfortable spending a good amount of time in. Feel free to light a few candles, add your favorite items, and fill the space with the means to support you and your journey.

3. Commit & Stay Consistent

Arguably the most important aspect of embarking on your new profound spiritual journey is committing to it and staying consistent with it. It is easy to pick up a new practice and commit to it for a few days or months, and then soon stop practicing it (we’ve all been there!).

Committing to your new spiritual practice also means you are committing to your individual growth. Try to instil discipline into your life when it comes to your spiritual practice, and implement tools to help you stay on track.

A little progress every day makes all of the difference!

4. Observe & Accept What You Have Learned

After you have been adopting your new spiritual practice into your life for a few days, or even a few months, this is an excellent time to reflect on what you have learned about yourself while establishing your new practice in your life.

Without any judgment or assumptions, ask yourself how you have felt exercising this new practice in your life.

What has brought you peace? How are you more aware of your surroundings? Where do you land in relation to your goals? What mindset or perspective shift have you experienced?

Whatever you choose to ask yourself and whatever the answer may be, accept it! No spiritual practice is linear, and you should listen to yourself to accept the change that you are experiencing.

5. Embrace Change

Every type of spiritual practice that has been exercised invites change. For many, change can be a frightening thought that has us reserved and unwilling to embrace it. However, I encourage you to open your heart and follow it! You never know where it will lead you.

This is also a fantastic opportunity to invite self-reflection into your spiritual practice and ask yourself a few questions about the change you are experiencing.

A few question prompts to get you started are:

  • In all pillars of your wellness, how do you feel in each of them?
  • What have you noticed about yourself since practicing your chosen spirituality?
  • What do you most enjoy about it?
  • What do you think you can improve?

Pay close attention to your responses to each question, and listen to yourself! Go with what feels right to you, and change what may not resonate with you any longer.
